šÆ From Bee to BNB: The Story Behind The Hive
Every great idea starts with a sparkāand for me, it started with bees.
Back in 2021, I was coming out of a major life change. Iād built a thriving B&B compound calledĀ Pollen, with four beautiful guest units that had done incredibly well. But when divorce happens, sometimes your properties go with it. Even so, I wasnāt ready to let go of the dream. The vision behind Pollen was still buzzing inside me, and I knew it needed a new homeāand a new name.
So, I turned my own home into something fresh, joyful, and entirely me. Thatās how The Queenāthe first unit of The Hiveāwas born.
š Where It All Began: The Pollen Honey Company
Long before The Hive, there was Pollen Honey Companyāmy very first ābee business.ā When I lived in Colorado, I drove across the United States sampling honey from local beekeepers. I learned just how different honey could taste depending on the region and the bloomsāOrange Blossom, Blackberry, Idaho Wildflower, and Sonoran Desert Honeyāeach one had its own sweetness scale, personality, and perfect culinary pairing.
It was a delicious adventure that deepened my love for bees and their incredible contribution to our world.
š” Building The Hive
When I came back to Fredericksburg, I wanted to create something that reflected my love for design, hosting, and the Hill Country lifestyleāall while honoring the bees that inspired me from the start.
I started exploring ways to build a small, sustainable compound without breaking the bank. Thatās when I landed on shipping containers. They were efficient, flexible, and totally different from the usual Hill Country build. But I didnāt want them to feel industrialāI wanted charm, warmth, and soul.
So, with the help of my friend and talented muralistĀ Stacy Morrison, we turned each container into a vibrant piece of art. Every mural is unique, buzzing with life, color, and creativity.
Each 40-foot container sits on rock skirting, with fire pit areas, private hot tubs, and covered patios perfect for evening wine or morning coffee. I placed each one carefully, so every guest feels secluded and surrounded by natureāeven though The Hive is just two miles from downtown Fredericksburg.
š» Why Bees Still Inspire Me
I used to keep bees myself, and while I donāt currently have any (a wax moth invasion sadly wiped them out), their legacy lives on in everything I do. I still have my old bee boxes out at The Hiveāreminders of where it all began.
One day, when life slows down just a bit, with the help of my fiancee Eric, Iāll return to keeping them again. Because the truth is, we canāt do much without themāand Iāll always be grateful for how much theyāve taught me about community, resilience, and sweet rewards after hard work.
š A Place Built with Heart
Creating The Hive was my way of reclaiming joy. It became a project that combined my love for hospitality, my passion for design, and my deep appreciation for nature.
As a single woman starting over, I wanted something that was mineāa creative space that would make people smile and remind them of what makes the Hill Country so special.
And now, when guests stay at The Hive and tell me they can feel the love and intention in every detail, I know the bees would be proud.
